WHY MORAVIAN?
The Moravian church is one of the oldest Protestant churches, predating the Reformation. It originated in Bohemia and Moravia (parts of the Czech Republic) in the late 1400s, based on the teachings of John Hus, as the Unitas Fratrum (Unity of the Brethren).
The church was driven underground during the Counter-reformation and barely survived. In the early 1700s, a few brethren established contact with Count Ludwig von Zinzendorf, who allowed the brethren to settle on his estate in Saxony, Germany. A small village was established called Herrnhut and became the centre of the Moravian Mission, which quickly established mission stations from Newfoundland and the USA to the Caribbean and South Africa. |
