The responsibilities of the Mission and Outreach Committee are to uphold the mission and purpose of the congregation in life and ministry and to investigate and promote congregational service and mission projects locally and abroad. These responsibilities are carried out by organizing and promoting local mission and outreach activities and by attending and reporting news from the District Mission Council and the Moravian Mission Development Committee. GSC committee members are Pat Lim, Joe and Rose Rahim and Dale Taylor. District mission members are Joe Rahim and Dale Taylor.
The Sandwich Club meets the fourth Monday of each month to make sandwiches for the Mustard Seed Street Ministry. This club is open to all ages. The sandwich making takes about an hour. In the winter clothing is collected for street ministry and warm socks are stuffed with personal items for distribution at drop-in centres. The committee also coordinates an annual community project with a financial grant from the Shell Community Service Fund.
Overseas mission projects have included hurricane relief to Honduras, famine relief to Chukotka in Siberia, funds for youth programming and schoolbooks for children in Costa Rica.
Good Shepherd Church received a cheque of $1000 from the Shell Canada Community Service Fund in the fall of 2000.
The funds were awarded to recognize and support Dale Taylor, a Shell Canada retiree. Dale has been working with the Mission and Outreach Committee for several years as coordinator.
"Shell believes contributions of time, effort and caring to non-profit organizations benefit the entire community. Through the Community Service Fund, Shell Canada recognizes and supports Shell people who give personal time to non-profit organizations on a regular, volunteer basis," says Kori Devost, Shell Public Affairs.
"We have supported Shell volunteers through the Community Service Fund for over 20 years. In 1999, Shell Canada granted more than $326,000 to over 240 non-profit organizations across Canada."
The project goal provide heavy-duty washer and dryer equipment for the EXIT drop-in center for use in their street ministry to youth. EXIT is a community outreach service for homeless youth in Calgary. Members and friends of the congregation will raise the additional funds required.
Information about the Community Service Fund and Shell's other Community Investment Programs are available by calling 1-800-338-1410.
